DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, June 20\, 2019\, the IEEE Consultants’ Network of Northern NJ (www.technologyontap.org) will host a presentation on Arduino Fundamentals. \n\n\n\nAbout the Topic\n\n\n\nThis is an overview of Arduino boards\, shields\, sensors\, Starter Kit\, and the Fundamentals certification. It also covers exam concepts from the Starter Kit project book which is aimed at getting you started with building a maker project. \n\n\n\nArduino produces one of the most popular families of open source hardware and software microprocessor kits for students and makers available today. Arduinos are the basis of many maker projects involving robots\, kinetic artwork\, musical instruments\, wearable devices\, instruments\, weather stations\, games\, sensors\, and many more. The Arduino Education group recently released an Arduino Fundamentals Certification program based on the Arduino Starter Kit projects to certify Arduino user’s skill and expertise. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nJay Morreale provides electrical engineering\, electronic prototyping\, modeling\, analysis\, design\, research and development\, and networking consulting services through his small business p-brane LLC. Some of his past projects include working with Raspberry PI and wireless energy-harvesting sensors for a smart home challenge\, an undersea power and communication junction box for an undersea observatory application\, a medium voltage power supply and actuator driver\, and adapting Labview software to control a 6 axis alignment robot that integrated an Arduino as a test instrument. \n\n\n\nBefore consulting\, Jay worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories and Lucent Technologies designing undersea telecommunication and optical networking hardware. He co-founded Red Sky Systems which made regional undersea systems. Jay earned a Bachelors and Masters in Electrical Engineering from the University of Arizona. When not consulting\, he is developing a graphene-based terahertz light source for communication and spectroscopy applications\, which has been awarded two patents. SUMMARY:Understanding Motors for Drones and Servos
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, May 16\, 2019\, the IEEE Consultants’ Network of Northern NJ (technologyontap.org) will host a presentation on Motors for drones and servos. \n\n\n\nAbout the Topic\n\n\n\nHow Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motors are constructed\, their performance\, and how to select them will be discussed. Both inside rotor and out runner motors\, as used in drones\, will be discussed. Brushless DC motors are used in high performance servo systems and in copter drones. They are capable of high power output in a given size\, making them the motor of choice for weight or size sensitive applications. When properly applied they are enormously robust. Without resorting to heavy math\, the basics of their design will be presented\, so that attendees can have a more complete understanding of how they work and what design features to look for. SUMMARY:Can learning ham radio make for better engineers and software developers?
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, April 18\, 2019\, the IEEE Consultants’ Network of Northern NJ (www.technologyontap.org) will host a presentation on Amateur Radio. \n\n\n\nAbout the Topic\n\n\n\nAmateur Radio\, often called “ham radio” is often described as the original social network for good reason. Ham radio was the virtual gathering place before there was the Internet\, Facebook and Twitter. But it also served as an incubator for many great ideas\, and more importantly it kept people thinking and technically curious. Why? Amateur Radio has allowed its participants to experiment freely with radio and electronic technology\, as well as share their ideas\, discoveries and inventions with others. From the early days of “spark” transmissions\, to today’s sophisticated digital and microwave communication\, we’ll talk about how amateur radio through the years has helped many a scientist and engineer stay curious\, as well as provide a welcoming distraction from daily life. We’ll also talk about some of the people you’ll find in ham radio\, from the non-technical person who grows to learn about electronics to the Nobel Laureate and astrophysicist who helped redefine communications technology for the radio amateur. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker(s)\n\n\n\nRia Jairam\, N2RJ has been licensed since 1997 in her native Trinidad and Tobago and in the US since 2001. First becoming interested in radio at age 5 from her dad who was an avid shortwave listener\, she became interested in Amateur Radio in secondary school under the mentorship of a teacher\, Mr. Tony Lee-Mack\, 9Y4AL. Ria is especially interested in radiosport (contesting) and DXing\, as well as building radios from kits\, magazines\, books or her own designs. She is also interested in digital VHF/UHF operating and digital weak signal modes developed by Dr. Joe Taylor\, K1JT. She especially enjoys remotely operating her amateur radio station over the Internet. \n\n\n\nRia credits amateur radio with keeping her technically curious and willing to learn and investigate. She also credits Amateur radio with opening up numerous opportunities for networking and professional development. \n\n\n\nShe has earned several amateur radio operating awards including several DXCC awards and contests. A keen Software Defined Radio (SDR) enthusiast\, she has won a “Top Elmer” award in 2016 for her work with internet remote access for Flex radios. She has also won two FlexRadio “Top Tester” awards for her work in testing and debugging SmartSDR 2.0 and the Power Genius XL solid state Laterally Diffused Metal Oxide Semiconductor (LDMOS) amplifier. She is also the District 2 chair of the Young Ladies Radio League (YLRL) and a member of the British Young Ladies Amateur Radio Association (BYLARA). Ria is an alumnus of the NYU Tandon School of Engineering\, where she studied Electrical Engineering. Professionally she does UNIX server engineering and I.T. for the financial industry. \n\n\n\nShe also currently serves on the board of directors of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL)\, having been elected in 2018 as director of the Hudson Division. What are the prospects for the US economy in the near future? The speaker\, Samir Padalkar\, will take a quick look at some often-debated basics of the 2008 financial crisis including causes\, financial products and the role of various players; banks\, insurers\, rating agencies\, Fannie – Freddie and the Federal Reserve. Most recently\, he was CTO of Hold Brothers\, a proprietary trading firm in NYC\, where he built a real-time equities and derivatives trading platform. Samir started his career with a B.Tech from IIT Madras and a PhD from Vanderbilt University. His research was patented and commercialized by the Osaka Gas Company of Japan. Later he joined Quant Trading as lead software developer and applied his Real-Time systems work to developing Fixed Income & Derivatives trading systems. In 1996 he lead the launch of ?Sector?\, one of the first off- the- shelf trading products on Wall Street\, selling it to companies like Daiwa\, GovPX\, TD\, ABN Amro\, Lehman & Chase.
